Techniques or Format

Garters made of hide. The tassels are made of hide thong that has been laced through the deer dewclaw. One garter is made of a single piece of leather. The other is made of a thicker piece with the ties added on. The tassles: the hide thong on one end is deer dewclaw and then it is laced through holes in the large piece of the gasrter and the end of that thong ends in a deer dewclaw; this is repeated for the length of the garter.

Collected by Lewis Henry Morgan in 1840s in New York State and bequeathed to the University of Rochester (U of R) upon his death in 1881. The collection was transferred from the U of R to the Rochester Museum in 1970.
