Nation of Maker: Odawa
Place of Origin: Emmet County, MI
Date Made or Date Range: 1850
Materials

Wool yarns (likely worsted), glass beads, plant fiber

Techniques or Format

Garter woven in narrow stripes of various colors (maroon, red, indigo, green and turquoise). Some of the stands are made up of two colours twisted together, rather than of a solid colour.

Motifs and Patterns

White beads in a regular sequence of parallel broken and staggered lines augment the design of horizontal stripes and also edge the garter.

Additional Context

A few of the dyes in garters of this type are puzzling, as the indigenous vegetable dyes would not have produced them, and fur trade records do not mention them (CW). According to Pohrt, the garter is made in a "local style."
