Nation of Maker: Anishinaabe
Date Made or Date Range: 1850
Materials

wool yarn, beads, linen thread

Techniques or Format

Loom-woven beadwork garter (single), with woolen yarn warp threads and linen weft threads. Basic double-thread loomwork.

Motifs and Patterns

Elaborate design, but less so than earlier examples. Notably odd colour and design choices. Not entirely symmetrical in design, with irregular diamond and hourglass patterns in mismatching colours (CW).

Additional Context

Assymmetry with four an element and three matching elements on either side may be meant to add up to seven (AC), though other variations seem random.

Other Notes

overall dimensions (including fringe): 41 x 3 in.

Dimensions: 11.5 × 3 × 0 in
Condition: Fraying black patches sewn onto one side appear to be an early attempt to conserve the beadwork, which actually may have increased stress on a section in which several rows of beads are now missing.
