Techniques or Format

Standing armless figure has flattened face and abbreviated features. The armless torso is carved to suggest a frock coat. The legs are thin and spindly. Surface is painted with a grayish-blue pigment. The figure has been nailed to a wooden block base.

Condition: Heavy loss of pigment from torso and legs.

Collected by Pohrt at Cross Village, 1968. Formerly in the collection of: Frank Francis family, Cross Village, Michigan. Family of Frank Francis are descendants of John Ojibway, a prominent Chippewa leader. Ojibway moved from St. Ignes area to Cross Village to be near Catholic mission.

Record Creation Notes/Observations

Item was photographed by Kelly Konieczki while on exhibit at the DIA. The images were meant to be temporary, in order to create a GKS record prior to the GRASAC team's visit, therefore detailed images are not yet available. During the GRASAC visit, discussion of this item was captured exclusively on video by Crystal Migwans during a walk-through of the galleries; members did not have access to internet/GKS at the time to enter information.
