The interpreters sent to Sandusky are informed by Major of Brigade Littlehales that they are ordered by Simcoe to provide an inventory of all the Stores and Rum they have brought in their possession and not to "issue any one article" without the permission of McKee. This document is interesting in that it establishes that the Department of Indian Affairs was well aware of the power held by an interpreter to purposely control the response illicited from parties to a negotiation. Here the interpreters are instructed that "The Union of the Indians being the great object of your being sent to Sandusky...you will exert all your influence...to dispose the Indian Nations under your guidance, to adopt such measures as Colonel McKee shall from time to time direct as necessary to their Common benefit & Preservation."
