A Midwiwin water drum with its original leather cover. The drum was collected by William Jones among the Anishinaabe near Leech Lake, Minnesota in 1904.

Techniques or Format

The drum is made of a hollowed (carved) maple trunk with attached maple bottom sealed with beeswax and is covered with a leather hide, which was strung by a cloth wrapped wooden hoop.
