Materials

wood, possibly maple(?); round headed nails; vegetable fibre; paint; white muslin; unsmoked hide; cornhusk; human hair; calico fabric; black silk tie; red stroud; glass beads; blue silk ribbon; hide thong; wool cloth

Techniques or Format

The cradleboard is made of carved wood, possibly maple(?). Round headed nails attach the carved footboard to the tapered end of backboard. Holes are made along the sides of the backboard where hide thongs are laced through to secure the wrappings. The carved wooden crossbar is attached to the backboard with rounded headed nails, and the notched ends correspond to each end of the curved wooden hoop, which together form a joint. The ends of the hoop are supported at the sides with wooden brackets which are tied to the backboard with hide thongs. The hoop and wooden bracket are decorated with low relief chip carving and paint. A strap of woven vegetable fibre is tied around the ends of the crossbar. The inner cradleboard wrappings are made of white muslin at the top and a narrow strip of blue patterned wool cloth at the bottom. The outer wrappings are made of red stroud with glass beads embroidered in floral designs with blue silk edging. Behind the doll's head is unsmoked hide. The doll is made of cornhusks with human hair sewn at the top. The dress is made of calico with a black silk tie around the neck.

Motifs and Patterns

Floral, with possibly three sisters, and double curve motifs along the border in beadwork. Triangles, radiating lines, stars and possible dome motifs in chip carving.

Other Notes

Stuffing of the baby bag (doll) doesn't appear to go all the way in; instead the maker seems to have inserted cornhusk to round out the bundle. Footboard is rounded. Rectangular holes in curved hoop possibly for hanging ornaments. Top of backboard is a notched into 'V' shape.
