Council held at Niagara 26th Sept. 1796
At this council meeting, Wapenip indicates that his peoples are agrieved by the murder of one of their chiefs, Wopeconine by a British settler. He asks Lord Russell to do well by his Indian friends, and gives him a string of wampum. Russell replies that one man has been apprehended and the search continues for those who have aided him. He states his knowledge that William Hohnson had previously given to them a "great belt" which was representative of their bond of friendship. He states he was sorrowed to hear that the "belt received a cut" by this incident. He responds with assurance that all that might be done is being done, and that the belt "has received neither cut nor bruise which we will not endeavour to heal with our kindness." Russell then gives a string of wampum to confirm the continued friendship. Wapenip confirms that the bond is "as firm as ever." ; This document is significant since it indicates that 32 years after the Treaty of Niagara, each of the British and the "Misssessague[s]" constructed their relationship with one another in terms of the status of the Covenant Chain belt. Russell's words indicate acknowledgment of British duties owed under the belt.
