Introduction

Beaded collar with four leafed motif and 2 stags or antlered animals. Worn in Hiawatha play by Chief Thomas Aptaseweh "Little Current" who was Ojibwe at Manitoulin Island, collected by Paul Radin June 1912 at Manitoulin Island.

Materials

Wool and cotton twill, beads, cotton thread, paper interlining

Techniques or Format

Dark red wool twill, napped with beaded motifs in opaque white and opaque light and dark blue beads. Backed with beige cotton twill. Spirally worked bead edging on all sides. Beads are threaded on cotton thread and the lines are loose-rows couched only at their centres. The motifs are worked on paper cut-outs and the collar is interlined with paper though which the beading is worked.

Motifs and Patterns

In centre front, a parti coloured quatrefoil between two dark blue stags. On either side of collar, meandering branch with light blue ovate leaves.

Other Notes

Ties are made from commercial shoelaces; backed with beige cotton cloth. Paper lining between backing and front. LD: does not look Anishinaabe; dancers exchanged or gifted each other items, regalia might be composed of gifted items; so items could move from one place to another.
