Introduction

European style frock coat of caribou (?)skin with painted designs, with wide v-shaped lapels, full length sleeves, fitted waist and flared back. Doule breasted, eight metal buttons, design is linear, mainly long narrow triangles. Double curve motif appears at shoulders, collected by Earl of Caledon, Huron-Wendat (Huron), 1800s - 1840.

Materials

caribou (?), eight metal buttons, painted yellow. Paint: blue, yellow, turquoise, brown and black designs.

Techniques or Format

Front each side has two panels sewn around waist, lower panels wrap around the back-- there are two triangular gores set into the back to make the flared skirt. Flat top triangle gores-- Upper panelsl of fron alsowrap around back and have a curved seam to cetnral panel of back shped with tailered. Separate small panel between the center seam joining front to back, a shaped back, tailored.

Motifs and Patterns

Linear, long narrow triangles, and double curve motifs at the shoulder, single curve designs on the lower front of the sleeve. Large rosette form painted centrally on upper back, two smaller rosettes painted at the back waist.
