wood, looks like maple (DP - tiger grain pattern in shaft, but not bend to the grain; wood would be selected where grain follows the curve to make it stronger - not done this way)

Looks like it is unfinished. Carved out of one piece; A couple of knots visible in random places - not a high grade piece of wood. S

Bird motif - open beak holding ball.
Other Notes
Not made for battle; too small; little patination - fresh looking piece of wood; not made from burl (i.e. not weighted with heavy ball)
