birchbark; dyed moosehair; thread
The case is made of sewn pieces of birchbark, with couching technique used along the edges. The birchbark has been ornamented with dyed moose hair in floral and foliate motifs. The body of the case has a birchbark liner which extends above the outer birchbark sides. The lid fits securely over the liner and when in place it is flush with the body of the case.
Floral motifs
Object contained a handwritten note that reads: "Moosehair embroidery / c.1850-60 / Maliseet-Huron Indians / (Riviere du Loop - three / Rivers - Lorette) / Paul family probably". Note may have been written on the back of possibly an old recipe? It is difficult to read.
