Introduction

Huron-Wendat birchbark cigar box or case embroidered with moosehair in floral designs, made between 1850-1900. Handwritten note found inside the case indicates it may have been made by a member of the Paul family. Donated to the museum by Elisabeth Houtzager in 1992.

Materials

Techniques or Format

The case is made of sewn pieces of birchbark, with couching technique used along the edges. The birchbark has been ornamented with dyed moose hair in floral and foliate motifs. The body of the case has a birchbark liner which extends above the outer birchbark sides. The lid fits securely over the liner and when in place it is flush with the body of the case.

Object contained a handwritten note that reads: "Moosehair embroidery / c.1850-60 / Maliseet-Huron Indians / (Riviere du Loop - three / Rivers - Lorette) / Paul family probably". Note may have been written on the back of possibly an old recipe? It is difficult to read.
