Introduction

Huron-Wendat birchbark cigar box or case wrapped in black cloth and embroidered with moosehair in floral designs, made between between 1875-1900. Donated to the museum by A. Prins in 1957.

Techniques or Format

The case is made of sewn pieces of birchbark overlaid with sewn black cloth, with couching technique used along the edges. The case has been ornamented with dyed moose hair embroidery in floral and foliate motifs; the designs are different on both sides. The lid of the case has two birchbark liners which extend above the outer sides. The body of the case fits securely over the liner and when in place it is flush with the lid of the case.
