This is a sketch of Ojibwa dancers performing a Sioux dance for Lord Lorne,who was on a tour of Canada with his wife, the Princess Louise.A large Union Jack dominates the background, and the clothing or regalia of the dancers and Native viewers is varied.

This work is signed and dated with an inscription in pen and black ink on the front upper left: Chippeways dancing the Sioux dance at Rat Portage; in pencil on the front lower left is written: Squaws and papooses; center on flag: CHIEF/MANITO; upper center:...arch; in pencil, on the front, 3 of July; in pencil, front upper right: 1799.

This work is from a scrapbook entitled "Canada 1878, Northwest 1881" consisting of drawings and watercolours done by Sydney Prior Hall while on a tour of Canada with the Marquis of Lorne in 1878, when he arrived in company with his wife, the Princess Louise, to take up his post as Governor-General of Canada, and while on a tour of the Canadian Northwest with the Marquis of Lorne in 1881 to promote settlement and to views the progress of railway construction.
