glasses case, moose hair embroidery, collected by Earl of Caledon, Huron-Wendat (Huron), 1800s - 1841.

Wendat: Beginning date is when original collector arrived. End date is when the original collector, the 3rd Earl of Caledon, returned to Ireland.

Materials

dark brown smoked walnut dyed hide with dark brown silk trim around both liner and outside case, commercial cotton thread, moose hair (green, pale-- faded blue, pink, reddy-orange, white)

Techniques or Format

Each piece made of 3 pieces of hide-- 2 pieces sewn together down the side, oval piece for end. Decorative seam/edge showing. Overcast/oversewn embroidery

Motifs and Patterns

Stylized floral motif-- design field framed with scallops not filled in. Little dots sprinkled in the design field.

Additional Context

Possible cosmological significance of skydome motifs RP

Condition: poor condition, mould-- loss of damage to the hide, lots of stitching loss.
