Place of Origin: Québec, QC
Date Made or Date Range: 1841/1842
Materials

black dyed (walnut brown) smoked hide, moose hair (blue (2 different shades), white, red), ribbon edging silk now burgundy-- colours quite faded, commercial cotton thread.

Techniques or Format

In two pieces. Inside liner (smaller piece) is one piece with a seam down the sides and a second piece stitched to form a base. Outside sleeve is made in the same way. Embroidery is overcast (oversewn line technique) on to hide. LS very difficult to do moose hair embroidery. Virtuoso embroidery. LS sees use of colour shadings as part of the influence of the Ursulines.

Motifs and Patterns

floral, stylized (compared to a later period). As a frame around the rectangular design field note that there are semi-circular, scallop shapes suggesting skydome motif.

Original and Subsequent Uses

cheroot case?

Other Notes

RP points out that this really isn't an eyeglasses case as eyeglasses of this period were much smaller. AdS is going to investigage sizes of cigars from the 19th century. LS pointed out that Frank Speck documented many of the Wendat stitch types.
