Introduction

Model canoe made with birch bark, spruce edging, and lined with blue polished cotton. Adorned with porcupine quillwork that forms patterns of stripes and chained diamonds. Collected by Johann Georg Schwarz and currently housed at the Weltmuseum Wien, Vienna, Austria. Mi'kmaq.

Techniques or Format

Made with a single piece of bark folded and sewn around edges; the shape of the canoe has rounded ends, which is the style of miqmaq; the folding creates a flat bottom.

Motifs and Patterns

Features black quill decoration on bottom; stripes and chained diamonds.

Dimensions: 7 × 0 × 4 cm
Condition: Good, but one side's stitching has come undone.
