Techniques or Format

Incised motifs on wooden slat, slightly curved lengthwise. The slat has been bevelled to form a shallow diamond cross-section. The wider end is straight across, while the narrower end is slightly peaked to form a shallow V. Pohrt notes: "Wooden prescription stick (box elder?) made from a rectangular board which has been flattened along the edges."

Motifs and Patterns

Plant motifs arranged around edge of board so that edge of board forms the ground. Series of plant motifs are separated by straight lines. Pohrt notes: "Engraved plant forms distributed in a regular series around the edges of both faces. Engraved human and animal forms added on the lower right hand corner of either side."

Additional Context

The segments of plant motifs in between the vertical lines refer to recipes for herbal medicines. Pohrt notes: "Plants featured on stick appear within an area and are used together to treat illness. The species of plant and quantity required known only to the maker of the board."
