Autumn Epple notes the drawn images are similar to modern drawings made by children, and that this may have been done by a child or youth. Identifiable are the images of canoes, men and women (men are in trousers; women are in long dresses), a turtle, and possibly a pike or other freshwater fish.
Autumn Epple theorizes that this object dates to between 1880 and 1891, as the collector, W.J. Hoffman, published information on birch bark records in "Midewiwin or 'Grand Medicine Society' of the Ojibwa" in the "Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology for the Years 1885-1886" (143-300), in 1891.
