Birch bark cigar case
Birch bark cigar case
Birch bark cigar case
This birch bark cigar case is decorated with human forms with hats, some carrying pipes and bottles, and one individual holding a white candle with a flame on the first side. Accompanying this is a dark-bodied bird with a white head and stomach. On the other side, two red birds are situated in a tree with what seems to be red fruit or flowers. A dog with a curled tail is looking at the birds, and plant imagery surrounds them. This cigar case is bound and decorated with a row of quillwork sewn to the top, and contains a birch-bark lining. This ancestor dates to pre-1852, as presented on inscriptions on the inside of the pouch that state the date to May 1, 1858, however, this does not confirm the date of the item.

The inside of the pouch contains a rolled piece of birch bark that states, "To Wilhelm Amann from/Henry Kattenhorn/Niagara Falls/May 1 [18]58"
inscription: Niagara Falls, May 1st '58. The index card also states 1858 as its date. However, as noted by a GRASAC team member, this does not mean it was made on this date.
