Introduction

This ancestor is a biiskawaagan, coat, made from deerskin, sinew, porcupine quills, glass beads, pigments, tin cones and dyed horse hair. The main body of this ancestor is a tan colour and has a white and red glass beaded edge with loose ends along the bottom of the coat. The front of the coat has two circular designs that alternate red and white vertical patterns, and solid white patterns. Hanging from these two circular designs are two pieces of deerskin that are partially wrapped in alternating white and orange colours. Along the collar of the ancestor are more beaded edging designs showing smaller circular patterns and red and white bordered edges. This biiskawaagan is fastened closed by two parallel holes closed by deerskin. There are two epilates along each shoulder of the coat which display detailed geometric designs of triangles in blue, white, orange, and red colours. Loose skin hangs from these designs, edged by orange beads, and are partially wrapped in red, blue and white porcupine quills. The sleeves of this ancestor show four horizontal segments of black and red dyed pigment lines. The back of the ancestor has a red edged collar, and a triangular and circular geometric pattern that stems vertically from the collar to mid back. Two matching circular designs in white red and orange patterns are on the shoulder blades, with hanging strings wrapped in white red and blue patterned string. These strings are closed by two tin cones. This ancestor is located in the Detroit Institute of Arts.
