Introduction

This two-piece belt was hand sewn using silk, cotton, beads, and metal hooks and eyes. Applique beadwork was done with shades of blue (3), shades of green (2) both transparent, yellow, gold, dusty rose, color-lined red, brown to create floral motifs. Item is from the 1890s, Great Lakes area. Mrs. Charles Scudder donated item in 1953.

Materials

Silk tape binding. Plain cotton backing. Beads appliqued on Muslin. Metal hooks for clasping, sewn with cotton thread. Hooks on one cuff, eyes on the other cuff. Cotton thread loops. Size 13 and 17 seed beads. Size 17 white background. Size 13: shades of blue (3), shades of green (2) both transparent, yellow, gold, dusty rose, color-lined red, brown.

Techniques or Format

Applique beadwork. Hand sewn. Crochet chains on opposite ends of eye/hook sides. Eyes, hooks, loops hand sewn on. Eyes are on one, hooks are on the other.
