Introduction

Haudenosaunee-style beaded pouch made of red wool stroud, silk ribbon and glass beads. Beaded on both sides with symmetrical geometric "netting" design made of diamond and zig-zag shapes. Constructed similarly to Chatelaine-style bags of the era, with flaps on either side at opening of pouch and the same design on front and back. Possibly Seneca (W.C.). Circa 19th century.

Techniques or Format

Possibly red stroud lined with natural cotton fabric, bound at the seams with green silk ribbon and edged with beads. Flaps on both sides of the bag are decorative. Beaded front and back

Motifs and Patterns

One side: Concentric bands of diamonds, zigzags, hexagons. Other side: Same designs as the front but with different colours

Dimensions: 19 × 20.2 × 0 cm
Condition: Some beads are missing along the edge, and the silk tape is also deteriorating
