Introduction

Pair of matching beaded panels, presumably intended for sewing on legging. Stylized, beaded floral spray stitched on black stroud, backed with green and red cotton, with blue cotton tape trim.

Date Made or Date Range: 1860s to 1880s
Materials

Black stroud, backed at one end only with printed green cotton and edge at the same end bound with red cotton. Blue cotton tape trim around remaining 3 edges, outlined with opaque white glass beads. Floral beadwork in opaque white, pale pink, pale blue and bright blue size 10 beads. Edged with blue and rose tape faded coarse silk.

Techniques or Format

Beads are attached by overlay stitch, strung on and couched with cotton thread.

Motifs and Patterns

Stylized floral spray - Central stem, three lanes deep with 6-petaled flower at bottom, top and mid-point. Off-shooting from main stem are 3 other types of stylized flowers.

Condition: Poor condition with partial loss of beadwork.

Collection Narratives and Histories

These panels were presented to the National Archives in 1936 by Amy Carr. They were then transferred to National Museum of Man History Division June 30, 1967. History transferred them to Ethnology Division where they became accession # 69/9/7 (III-G-859ab) on March 25, 1969.
