Tag says: "A birch bark container, made of one piece of bark bent up and secured at the side with hay wire. Dan claims that this is the same kind of container that was laid on the ground at the base of the tree below a cut in the trunk to catch maple sap. Only they were secured with a basswood strip, not hay wire. In use 40 years ago. / this he made 'last year' to catch rain water to put in battery water for this purpose he didn't want to touch metal."

Collected by Miss June Smith on June 30, 1961 from the maker, Mr. Dan Sampson. According to Al Corbiere, Samson is a name from Sheshigwaning.
