This late 20th century miniature lidded basket is made using the plaiting technique, with wider ash splint spokes, and weavers made of narrow ash splint and possibly sweetgrass(?). A wider splint is looped through the top of the lid to form a small handle. Likely Anishinaabe from Ontario, this basket was collected by Elisabeth Houtzager and was donated to the museum in 1992.

ash splint; possibly sweetgrass (?)
This basket is made using the plaiting technique, with wider ash splint spokes, and weavers made of possibly sweetgrass(?). Narrow ash splints are used as weavers around the middle of the body of the basket as well as the middle of the lid, creating a decorative motif. A wider splint is looped through the top of the lid to form a small handle.
The difference in the colour of the sweetgrass(?) and narrow ash splint weavers creates a decorative motif on the body and lid of the basket.
