Shoulder bag with beaded geometric design on front and shoulder strap.

Date Made or Date Range: Late 19 C
Materials

made of size 10 seed beads, woolen yarn, woolen binding tape, stroud cloth, strap of very inexpensive twill cloth, pouch is lined with plain unbleached muslin, ?silk ribbon appliqued on cloth above top edge of bag, cotton thread, yarn tassels on on neck strap;

Techniques or Format

panels of loomwoven beadwork sewn to bag front and shoulder strap, linear applique beadwork border sewn through all layers, linear beadwork sewn over ribbon above pouch opening, strap attached to pouch at a 45 degree angle

Other Notes

on-site researchers: unusual that design field above pouch opening is left blank -- often has appliqued beadwork Ruth Phillips: interesting geometric motifs, classical opposition of thunderbird motifs on right, with serpentine motifs on the bottom. Cory Willmott: central motif on bag front is a classic crayfish design Ruth Phillips: could the 'cray fish' also be a variation on the thunderbird design?

Condition: good, some moth damage on strap
