Techniques or Format

Bag has a pouch. See opening, is best described under motifs. Unusual: strap is woven, one continuious line. Also unusual, back of pouch is made of black velvet, black of strap is lined with unbleached canvas.

Motifs and Patterns

Panel: 4 rows of repeating stylized leaves, that are symmetically opposed from the horizontal lines, divided by a row of equidistant crosses separated by diamonds. On the outside of these motifs are Xs. Very significantly, the panel has a border on all four sides of squares joined by little lines in between. tabs: 11, middle one is a series of multicoloured ascending chevrons. In general what is on either side is not symmetical, excepting starting on the out edges the tab is inverted step triangles. next 2, multicolour versions of otter tail, next ones (3rd from the edge, are asymetrical. On right, series of downward pointing chevrons, On left, 3 rows of stepped triangles. Next pair, 4th from the outer edge on the right, multi-coloured diagonal strip. On the left, 3 rows of two toned otter tails. Next pair, on right, mutli-coloured diagonal stripes, and on left, 3 rows of inverted triangles (regular, not stepped). Moving up to the panel above the pouch: above panel is typical black velvet design field with white bead designs (otter tails, zig, zags, linear beadwork in general) but what is unusual is that this design field has been divied in half, with the pouch opening occuring in the middle. Bottom half of middle is vertically symetical floral motif, and above pouch opening are the initails C,A,L (separated by commas) flanking the letters are what look like bells (in beads). On the strap: unusually the strap is the same on both sides and is woven continuously (unusual). Consists of two rows fo repeating stars (8 points) of alternating colours and those are flanked by rows of repeating diamonds (with crosses inside) and they are separated by variation of arrow and triangle motifs. They are the same, except that on the left side, the first pair of stars are yellow instead of the colours of the remainder. The entire strap has black velvet with white zig zag and red tap outline (entire bag is outlined this way).

Additional Context

Very significantly, the panel has a border on all four sides of squares joined by little lines in between. CW interprets this as offering blankets in a midi ceremony. Row of crosses in the middle may refer to initiation in midiwiwin.
