Introduction

Carved and painted wooden cradleboard with cotton bag attached. Identified as "Iroquois" but looks more like it is Anishinaabe. (A.N.) According to catalog record, this cradleboard was made circa 1900. Harvey Collection

Techniques or Format

Board: top cut in rounded saw-tooth edge; criss-cross lines creating diamond patterns are carved on top with three cut-out hearts below. Board, outside of frame and bow are painted dark green. Frame: curved frame secured by hide thongs tied through holes in board. Bow is curved and so is frame. Moss bag is laced onto frame with hide thong. Bag is navy blue wool on outside and lined with white or natural-colored cotton muslin. Back: crossbar nailed to board. The bow is attached to the board through holes and nailed to back crossbar. Strap on back made of plaid flannel (cotton?); one of edges has hide drawstring sewn into it (attached to board with hide strung through holes in board). Metal wire is secured to strap (used for hanging?) Top of board has same carving as front.
