Introduction

Anishinaabe baby carrier made of carved and painted wood, with cloth bag and ornaments made of hide and animal bone. Collected by Frank Speck in 1936; donated to museum in 1948.

Materials

wood (painted), wool flannel, plaid-printed cotton cloth,natural-colored cotton, wire, nails, waterfowl beaks (goose or duck), hide thong; palate/teeth and vertebrae of small mammal

Techniques or Format

wood is painted dark green; frame is covered with deep purple wool fabric lined with natural-colored cotton cloth, trimmed with blue/beige plaid fabric; waterfowl beaks strung together with hide thong on side; teeth and bones strung onto inside of bow (bones are painted red)

Condition: paint wearing off; fabric deteriorating
