Introduction

This is a letter from D. Clause to William Johnson. There appears to be three broad topics of discussion. The first is the escape of a male pani Indian and the subsequent loss of one of Johnson's horses. Claus writes of his efforts to retain another horse for Johnson. Sections of this document are difficult to discern, but I believe this topic concludes with Claus saying he will obtain another pani woman. The next issue is a brief discussion about clothing (a beaver coat and shoes). Claus seems to offer some aesthetic judgment here, but it is difficult to tell what that judgment is. Finally, this document establishes that the "Canad[*]ins" who have been on a hunt have returned. The result of their return has somehow displeased General Gage.

Mohawk Riv. [NOTE: If there was a "Mohawk River" in 1760 near where D. Claus was stationed in February, this is likely a reference to that place than it is to the Mohawk nation].
