Native American Heritage Month, Treaty recognition week, and Indigenous veterans Day

The Native American Heritage Month  has been celebrated in various ways since before 1915. The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum have created a site with virtual exhibits, resources for teachers, and audio, video, and images to highlight this month.

November 6-12 is Treaties Recognition Week in Ontario. This annual event has been occurring since 2016 when it was instated by the Ontario legislature in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action.

You can also learn more about Great Lakes treaties through the GRASAC Treaty Timeline. This Treaty Recognition Week marks one year since the Timeline was launched, and it continues to be developed by an excellent group of GRASAC RAs. Stay tuned as new treaty records are added over the coming week!

November 8 is Indigenous Veterans Day. One virtual event marking this occasion is being hosted by the Canadian War Museum. It will include a screening of Homecoming Song and a presentation by John Moses (Upper Mohawk and Delaware of the Six Nations of Grand River), Director of Repatriation and Indigenous Relations at the Canadian Museum of History, who served during the Cold War, following many generations of his family.
