Bison hair garter pendant. Northeastern North American, Anishinaabeg or Haudenosaunee. Part of the Christy Collection, this item was donated to the British Museum by Henry Christy between 1860 and 1869.

Materials

Made of bison hair with dark brown pony beads. Decorated with lighter brown bison hair and a fringe of metal cones containing red dyed deer hair and twelve quill wrapped warp threads.

Techniques or Format

Finger woven, with interwoven pony beads with quill-wrapped tassles. The top is unfinished, suggesting that this piece was sold to curiosity trade.

Motifs and Patterns

Diagnonal lines in the beads, grouped in threes with a break in design where garter was folded over.
