Black buckskin, porcupine quills, cotton print fabric
Edges were once bound with white quillwork. Lower edge: clusters of fringes partially bound in white quillwork.
The bag and flap of black buckskin is ornamented with delicate geometric designs of porcupine quillwork in rows of red, yellow and blue diamond and scroll motifs with broader bands of red/blue, black/white quills forming overlapping X's. On verso: worn cotton print of blue- bordered pink flowers and stripes on red ground.
According to Pohrt: "a good early example of geometric and double curve designs in quillwork. In the Great Lakes region, so far as is known, the central diamond quilled band in black and white is unique."
Provenance
Formerly in the collection of James Keene, Birmingham, Michigan.
