A birch bark container made by Dan Samson of Sheshigwaning, Manitoulin Island. A type used to collected maple sap but he used it for battery water. Collected by June Smith. Anishinaabe.

(CMC record) "This type was used 40 years ago to catch maple sap, the only difference being that they were secured with a basswood strip. It was made in 1960 for the purpose of collecting water."

(Item tag) "This he [Dan Sampson] made "last year" to catch rain water to put in battery water for this purpose he didn't want to touch metal."

Tag says: "A birch bark container, made of one piece of bark bent up and secured at the side with hay wire. Dan claims that this is the same kind of container that was laid on the ground at the base of the tree below a cut in the trunk to catch maple sap. Only they were secured with a basswood strip, not hay wire. In use 40 years ago. / this he made 'last year' to catch rain water to put in battery water for this purpose he didn't want to touch metal."
