Woman's leggings. Hodenosaunee, Seneca. From the Tonawanda Reservation, New York. Collected by Joseph W. Keppler and acquired by the National Museum of the American Indian in 1937.

Materials

Brown stiff woolen cloth; red silken ribbon; red cotton tape; size 12 opaque white beads; beige thread; black thread.

Techniques or Format

Each legging has two portions - a bottom portion made of a single piece of cloth, and a top portion, sewn to the bottom, made from a piece of the same cloth. The red edging is mostly cotton tape, however, a small portion on legging A is silken ribbon.

Motifs and Patterns

The band of small vertical lines in the beaded border are intentionally slightly diagonal, creating a tight zig zag effect.
