An octopus bag made of red and navy stroud, decorated with beadwork and tassels made of Russian faceted beads. Likely from the Plateau region. Donated to the Pitt Rivers Museum in 1954 by Irene Marguerite Beasley.

One side of the bag is navy blue stroud and the other is red stroud. The seams are edged with red and faded blue silk ribbon. The bag is lined with a printed cotton textile. The bag has 8 tabs, 4 on each side. There are tassels on the bottom of the bag, strung with Russian faceted beads that terminate in red, navy blue, and brown woolen yarn. The strap is made of braided brown woolen yarn.
The bag is decorated with stylized floral motifs.
The beads found on the lower tassels are classically North West coast.

Donated to the Pitt Rivers Museum in 1954 by Irene Marguerite Beasley. Her husband, Harry Geoffrey Beasley acquired this item from the Reading Museum in 1937. (Pitt Rivers Museum Object Catalogue)

The placement of motifs and choice of motifs on the bag suggest a the Plateau as a region of origin. CP says it has a "blobby" style typical of this region. Certainly not from the Great Lakes.
