Materials

tanned, smoked brown (walnut shell) skin, cotton commercial thread, moose hair dyed (white, orange (faded red?), pastel shades of yellow, blue and pink, black silk ribbon edging

Techniques or Format

Moosehair attached with overcast/oversewn line technique. Case consists of pieces. Outer case is constructed from 3 pieces of hide, 2 pieces which are sewn together down the sides with a third piece forming the base. Decorative edge along each seam. Inner case is made of 3 pieces as well, same as outer. Has decorative line around the edge, and only design field is the bottom of the case.

Motifs and Patterns

Inner design field stylized floral, framed with scalloped edging, with blue flowers on inside scallops. More elaborate than III-H-412ab. White dots (LS was told it was done to make the work "stand out").

Additional Context

Possible skydome with scalloped edge.

Condition: fair to poor, mould (refer to conservation)

du Près arrived in Canada as Captain of the Coldstreem Guards in March of 1841, returned to Ireland in November, 1842 (source: CMC catalogue card) , When du Près was in Canada. , Possibly purchased from the family of the Earl. Needs additional research.
