Introduction

A Hodenosaunee lamp mat of blue velvet and glass beads. Made between 1837 and 1901. Given to the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology by Marshall Joseph Becker in 1986.

blue velvet; small (sizes 12 and 10) translucent glass beads; cotton; cream silk ribbon; clear tubular beads; cream coloured thread; cardboard?

Techniques or Format

A circular piece of blue velvet with an undulating 8-lobed edge, backed with cotton and edged with cream-coloured silk ribbon.. There may be a piece of cardboard between the velvet and cotton backing. Slightly raised beadwork decorates the mat around the outer area, with a central circle left without beadwork.

Rosettes and leaves, and a mesh or lace-like background pattern.
