No notes in Collector's file as to usage, but field notes dated June 30, 1914, informant Peter John referred to the following game in which the above stems were possibly used. "Game of (cannex or other stems) straw; take 25 or 30 of straws; mark two straws with one mark, two straws with two marks; two straws with three marks; These are mixed with the other straws. When a player draws the single mark it counts 10. The stick with two marks, 20, and that with three marks, 30. Each player lets his own sticks scatter (in usual way). He must then take a wooden stick made purposely as remove as many straws as possible without moving the others as soon as players move a straw ever so little he must quit. Each straw with no marks on it counts 1. The straws were made of Phragmites stem. P.J. saw it played at a wake. It was also played at any other time. Beans might be used to count but often the count was simply remembered. Thinks they played for 100 points (not sure)." (NOTE) the stems appear unmarked, but way sections are peeled could indicate marking (D.T.P. Collector's notes say game of 70 pieces, but there are 71 in this lot.)
