Silver
Long rectangular hat band made of silver bent into a circle. The upper edge is scalloped. A leather thong is tied to one end.
Ornamentation consists of a central band of piercings with hourglass and diamond shapes, as well as engraved meandering bands.
Engraved half circle in center of lower edge; flat triangles.
According to Pohrt, "Hall marked each end 'MONTREAL.'" Maker's mark visible on left side when facing band: "(unknown letter or mark)ONT(unknown letter)." Maker's mark also visible on right side when facing band, but first letter, top portion and last few letters cut off. Comparison with Montreal stamp published in Martha Hamilton (1995) Silver in the Fur Trade, p. 174, supports this interpretation. Lower edge examined to see if modified, but not conclusive.

About This GRASAC Record
Item was photographed by Kelly Konieczki in DIA storage before the team's visit. During the GRASAC visit, a maker's mark was identified by team members- "visible on left side when facing band." A maker's mark is also visible on the right side. Although these marks are visible in research images #4 and #6, closer photographic details of these maker's marks would be desirable.
