Date Made or Date Range: 1840
Materials

wool yarn, glass beads, plant fiber

Techniques or Format

Single oblique interlacing, beads are accessory on yarn. Garters woven of wool (three Z singles, S plied) with supplementary S plied vegetable fiber strung with beads. Finish: two rows of two strand weft twining. Fringe: three strand interlacing, with some beads. One garter is red, the other orange-red, apparently two different dye lots were used.

Motifs and Patterns

Garter with red center area with ten parallel rows of white zigzag beading. Blue border, which extends to the fringe, has pairs of white non-parallel zigzag lines which together form a chain of diamonds.

Additional Context

The 'faded' piece of the pair may in fact be a different colour of thread, or a lighter version of the same colour. When dyeing 'in the field', there may be significant variation even within the same dye lot (DP). The maker may have run out of the dark blue yarn that appears in one garter, but only sparingly in the second (DJ).
