Materials

warp is sinew, weft is cotton thread. Red pigment of some kind has been rubbed on the belt. Can see traces on the warp/weft and fringe.

A series of 3 nested diamond patters in white, on a purple background, separated by 2 parallel diagonals followed by three more diamonds. This belt also has the checkerboard pattern at the end of each row.

Extract of letter from Speck: "There are two of them (wampum belts). They came from the Iroquois at Oka Reserve and of course are very old. I got them from a Frenchman who had married an Indian woman. He had brought them with him from Oka, where an old chief had sold him the pieces, telling him that the white figures on the blue background denoted chiefs, the more elaborate the figure the higher in rank was the chief."
