Loom woven sash or belt decorated with beadwork. Northeastern Woodlands, held in the British Museum's Ethnology collection.

Materials

Woven with a red wool warp and vegetable fibre wefts. Decorated with glass beads in dark and light blue, medium blue, white, gold, green and turquoise.

Techniques or Format

Loom woven, with 29 rows.

Motifs and Patterns

A row of four concentric squares, separated by a pattern of stepped truncated triangles. This triangle motif could represent the base of pine tree found on the Hiawatha belt, or images associated with an underwater being. AC said the meaning of this motif depends upon its orientation.
