A pair of Hodenosaunee moccasins, from the last quarter of the 19th century. Made of commercially tanned hide with floral beadwork. They are still attached at the heels and vamps as they would have been when offered for sale. Given by Mrs. Pieskelt/Peskett to the Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, date unknown.

commercially tanned hide; black woolen cloth; pale pink polished cotton; red cotton tape; paper lining; size 12 glass beads in opaque white, blue, rose, mustard, and translucent green, mustard, clear, red heart; size 10 opaque white glass beads; sequins; thread; paper.
The moccasins have an inset vamp and a one piece cuff which is made of cloth with heavy paper backing, not hide. They are lined with a pale pink polished cotton. The vamps and cuffs are decorated with beadwork, and the cuffs are edged with a red cotton tape binding.
Floral motifs and zig-zag border lines.
These moccasins appear not to have been worn, they are still stitched together at the heels and the cuffs are still stitched together in front as they would have been when offered for sale. They also appear to be unusually narrow.
Based on the use of commercially tanned hide and the style of beadwork.
