Introduction

Ball headed club, probably Great Lakes. Made before 1888. Collected by Albert Denison, the first Baron of Londesborough and donated to the British Museum in 1888 by Sir Augustus Wollaston Franks.

Wood, paint; black, green, and red

Techniques or Format

The ball is very round and painted black, and appears to be mottled. Motifs decorating the club are painted on with red, green and black pigments.

Motifs and Patterns

The spine of the club is decorated with zig zag patterns and beaver, porcupine and bird motifs. Half way down, near the handle, the shaft is painted black. There is a drilled hole on the handle, where a thong or feathers could be affixed.

Condition: Good.
