Introduction

Lidded ash splint strawberry basket with handle. Made with the plaiting technique and decorated with fancy loop pattern on the lower half. Made by Nathan Lambertson, Anishinaabe from Saginaw, Michigan in 2008, and collected by Pieter Hovens during a field trip in the same year.

Materials

Techniques or Format

Shaped in the form of a strawberry, this ash splint basket is made using the plaiting technique. Wider strips of ash splint decorate the lower half of the basket in fancy loops. The handle, or "stem", is made of long ash splint dyed green that is looped and wrapped with smaller green splints that branch out on the top of the lid to form "leaves". The handle is secured to the lid with sweetgrass, natural and dyed red, and ash splint. Sweetgrass is wrapped with ash splint along the edge of the lid to create a trim.
