Techniques or Format

Club having an abbreviated or simplified gunstock shape with a cylindrical grip area bordered by a collar on the bottom and a serrated relief band above the handle. The portions of the club above the handle are stained black. There is a hole drilled through the corner of the top end of the stalk (the head) for hanging decorations or for a strap/handle. There is no blade or flint ever inserted at the elbow point, as is often the case. No evidence of file burning, but it might be painted or stained instead. On handle, either paint worn away, or never dyed (probably the latter, since there is a straight line separating dark from light wood).

Motifs and Patterns

Zig zag relief carving where handle meets the shaft. A single incised line encircles the middle of the handle. Very subtle dip or groove at lower end of head.

Other Notes

AC: Also called a sword club. These have rounded handles while the shaft is flat.

Dimensions: 23.25 × 4.125 × 0 in
