This preverb is used in the independent order, and in some dialects, only when there is no structural personal prefix present (the structural personal prefixes are <c>ni</c>, <c>gi</c>, and <c>o</c>. What complicates things in Nishnaabemwin is that the <c>o</c> prefix, while structurally present, is deleted by syncope. When a personal prefix was present, the corresponding preverb <c>ga-</c> was used. However, in some areas, such as Wikwemikong, <c>da-</c> is used with all transitive forms that traditionally had an <c>o</c> third person prefix, as in, e.g., <c>da-shamaan</c> and <c>da-shamgoon</c>.
