Introduction

This watercolor painting by Phillip John Bainbrigge depicts the ruins of St. Eustache, the site of a significant battle during the Lower Canada Rebellion in 1837. The rebels were defeated by the British army and the town was burnt. The specific Great Lakes nation of the figures depicted is not known.The painting is dated 14 December, 1837.
